When you hear the word "passive", you might think of something that just sits back and doesn't do anything. But the passive safety systems in Honda cars, trucks, and SUVs are there to help keep you safe at the instant you need them. Honda vehicles have both active and passive safety systems. Those titles refer to when they come into play. Active safety systems are things like the Road Departure Mitigation System and Lane Keeping Assistance System, which are constantly monitoring the road ahead of you. By contrast, the passive safety systems are things like the Advanced Airbag System and the Seatbelt Pretensioners and Load Limiters, which automatically activate when a collision is imminent or when a collision occurs.

Airbags: Like Comfort Pillows, But Even Better

What's more comforting than your favorite soft, fluffy pillow? The comfort of knowing Honda's advanced system of airbags will deploy in milliseconds if you ever have a serious impact. If you have an impact at a low speed, which has less force than impacts at higher speeds, the airbags will remain in their housings, to prevent the need to have them reset. If the impact has enough force that the seatbelts won't be enough to prevent injury, the airbags will fully inflate in less than 1/20th of a second to serve as cushions between you and various parts of your vehicle's interior. Equally importantly, the airbags will then deflate within about 1/4 of a second, to avoid blocking your view of your surroundings.

Seatbelts That Hug You

Each and every 3-point seat belt in each and every Honda comes equipped with an automatic tensioning system, also called seatbelt pretensioners. Ordinarily, the seatbelt retractor mechanisms will allow the seatbelt straps to move freely, so you can pull them out to wrap them around you, or lean forward while they're on. But in the event of an impact with moderate to severe force, the seatbelts instantly tighten both the shoulder harness retractor and the waist harness retractor to stop the forward momentum of your body.

The seat belts in Honda vehicles also feature load limiters. They lighten the amount of pressure your chest and waist experience during a high-velocity crash, thereby reducing the amount of pain or injury you would otherwise experience. When an amount of pressure on the seatbelt would be harmful to you, the load limiters will spool out a controlled amount of slack, which allows you to ease toward the airbag in front of you, further cushioning your deceleration.
